Starting on Monday, November 10th I will be providing the Comment Dit-On? words on the blog to assist you in helping your students study for our weekly Comment Dit-On? quiz.
What, What, What Is Comment Dit-On???
Comment Dit-On is a program I have been running since the beginning on the school year. Every Monday I introduce about 15 new words, verbs and turns of phrase to the class. Each student is expected to write the words out in their Daily French Journal, where they can use the list as a resource every day as we practice these words orally (this is student led, I am available to assist with pronunciation only during the Comment Dit-On activity). On Wednesday each student chooses the four trickiest words on the list and writes them out five times to practice, but they are largely responsible to take their Daily French Journal home every evening to practice their written French. When Friday arrives we do our oral practice once again, and immediately write the quiz.
Why would my child need to be studying these words?
I always choose vocabulary relevant to the time of year (For example,. the seasons changing, holidays), verbs we have studied or are currently studying (as a refresher, or an application of their learning) and useful, thematic idioms and expressions.
It is said that to learn a language you must commit to learning 10 - 20 new words a day. In Grade 5 this could seem like a daunting task, but Comment Dit-On allows for practice of oral pronunciation, word recognition during reading, and of course time to write words out learning how the French language works in it's written form.
